Students built the future – the first PLC programming competition of John von Neumann University successfully concluded.

High school students measured their knowledge in the latest industrial technologies on Friday at the GAMF Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology of John von Neumann University. Kecskemét CAMPUS organized its first PLC programming competition, where students had to make a virtual technology work. The goal was to bring the world of Industry 4.0 closer to young people and give them practical experience in the engineering tasks of the future.

The GAMF Faculty of John von Neumann University was filled with spectacular technological solutions and exciting engineering challenges on Friday. The institution organized the PLC programming competition for the first time. Ten teams of three high school students arrived for the challenge, who were able to prove their expertise in industrial automation during a full day of task solving. In the competition, the students programmed Siemens SIMATIC PLCs, and Profinet communication ensured the connection between the control and the virtual technology. During the work, they could use different versions of the TIA Portal development environment, which is also a common system in the industry, thus gaining real, practice-oriented experience. During the day, an IO test, a task presentation, and then a multi-hour programming challenge awaited them, while their teachers got acquainted with the faculty's infrastructure during laboratory visits. In the afternoon, the teams presented their finished solutions, which were evaluated by a professional jury, and the event concluded with sponsor presentations and the announcement of results. According to the organizers, the competition not only provided a professional experience but also motivated young people to choose the technical and engineering career path in our increasingly digitized world.
