Do we really need Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles?
The emphasis could be on two words:
“Need”: I can certainly understand that FCEVs have great advantages in many situations. However, “need” also includes “there is no alternative”.
“Really”: One thing that I find interesting is that the “need” for FCEVs is mainly promoted by people who either want to produce and sell hydrogen, fuel cells, hydrogen tanks or similar things. I don’t hear many “battery guys” saying “we can’t achieve X or Y, therefore FCEVs will definitely be needed”.
Apart from the academic papers that I know I don’t see many companies investing like crazy into hydrogen infrastructure. Yes, Germany has built some 100 light duty hydrogen refueling stations, but if we think long term, that’s still close to nothing.
Plus: There’s a huge technology gap that has to be bridged if we think about very large heavy duty refueling stations. Yes, I know, that’s possible, and of course, I know companies that would argue that they are working on it.
But guys, let’s be honest: Single companies working on prototypes and first products are not the same as “factories producing 10,000+ items per year”. And even if Rome wasn’t built in a day either, other companies working e.g. on batteries are not hiring complete idiots either. This technology has made an incredible progress far beyond any “expert prediction”.
And there is one more thing: I don’t see many companies making money in their “Hydrogen as an Energy Carrier” business. On the other hand, I see companies like Tesla, BYD, CATL and others making significant profits in the BEV business.
In our next webinar, I will share some thoughts on Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles both from the engineering side and the user experience side. I will not give you answers to your questions – all I will do is discuss the most important questions the “FCEV industry” has to address to remain in the game. Or at least to become a little relevant beyond the “MoU+R&D+Subsidy” bubble.
This will help you to understand:

  • What is going on out there
  • What the customer experience of a Tesla Model Y is compared to a Hyundai Nexo and a Toyota Mirai (did I tell you that we own all of them?)
  • How I see the cost structure of BEV Chargers vs. Hydrogen Refueling Stations
  • Where I see critical gaps in the hydrogen infrastructure technology
  • How I currently see the “But if we do it in Chile it’s going to be cheap” discussion
  • Who is probably not going to solve the problem (even though they could)
  • What your company and you can do to bridge the gaps
  • What you have to teach me to make sure I get back on track because I missed a lot of important information in your opinion ;-)

But seriously, I am not claiming that I know everything. Certainly not about the future of the worldwide energy system in every country and every situation.
I just see what is going on in my little corner of the world. I see our projects, I see the terrible bureaucracy around hydrogen (“Bureaucracy must be reduced” is probably the only sentence every politician in every country would support – but guess what happens at least in Germany: More and more is added every year.).
And I see companies like Tesla, BYD and others becoming more and more successful whereas the gap between “announced hydrogen projects” and “real life hydrogen projects” gets bigger and bigger every day. Maybe there’s a reason for that.
Long story short: I will share some of my latest thoughts on FCEVs with you. You might not like all of them, some of them might be wrong or narrow-minded – but I hope that they will give you food for thought beyond the usual “hydrogen is my religion” bubble.
